The Greater South Central Missionary Baptist
Church was organized in January 1966 under
the leadership of Rev. Andrew L. Bowman.
Rev. Bowman had been Pastor of the South
Central Missionary Baptist Church in the
Joppa community of Dallas prior to
organizing Greater South Central M.B.C. The
first assembly of six charter members was
held in the home on Kellogg Street
of Bro. and Sis. Don King.
In September 1966, the first church building
was purchased at 1207 Diceman Avenue. This
facility became known as “the little
church”. The Lord added greatly to the
church as he saw fit.
After outgrowing the Diceman Street location
and after months of prayer and fasting, the
church moved into the present location at
3002 S. Denley Drive on the second Sunday of
August 1971. Several members of the former
church at this location, Greater Olivette
Missionary Baptist Church, joined the
Greater South Central family.
On August 12, 1973, Pastor Bowman was called
to pastor the Union Baptist Church in
Denver, Colorado. On January 1, 1974
Associate Minister, Rev. W. J. Atkins, was
called as Pastor.
During Pastor Atkins’ tenure, five brethren were called to
the ministry. Brothers Ray Cotton, Ellis
Lane, Alvin Draper, D. S. Marshall and Bruce
McCoy accepted their call to preach the
Word. The congregation increased rapidly
and in April 1974, the church was remodeled
to add some much needed seating for both the
congregation and the choir. The remolded
edifice enabled the church to hold the first
Anniversary Service in October 1975. In
August 1977, Pastor W. J. Atkins was called
to pastor another church. Along with the
aide and guidance of the Holy Sprit, the
Associate Ministers Rev. Alvin Draper and
Rev. Bruce McCoy, led the church through
this trying time.
On the first Sunday in February 1978, Rev.
J.C. Adams of Austin, Texas was called to
pastor Greater South Central. The church
was again renovated in 1980 and the first
cornerstone was laid on August 9, 1981. Bro.
Bernard Gilliam was called into the ministry
under the leadership of Pastor Adams.
In October 1981, Pastor Adams was called to
pastor out of the city. Rev. Bruce McCoy
was the ministry leader during this period.
Guided by the Holy Spirit, a host of members
from the Bexar Street Baptist Church were
led to unite with Greater South Central.
On the first Sunday in March of 1982, Greater South
Central’s son in the ministry, Rev. Bruce W.
McCoy, was called to pastor the church.
Under Rev. McCoy’s leadership and guidance
from the Holy Spirit, Greater South Central
grew spiritually, numerically, and
financially. During this period the Church
made several trips to the Sunday School and
B.T.U. Congress, where a large number of
youth and adults attended. Rev. McCoy
remained as Pastor until December 10, 1987.
In March of 1988, the Church, depending on
the Holy Spirit, was led to call Rev. Morris
Broden as pastor of Greater South Central.
On July 5, 1989, Rev. Broden was called to
pastor another church in the city.
In January of 1990, after praying and
fasting, the Rev. Kevin Rogers was called to
pastor Greater South Central and remained
until February 29, 1991, when he was called
to pastor another church within the city.
On July 7, 1991, after much prayer and
leaning on the Holy Spirit for guidance, the
church was led to call Rev. Bernard Gilliam
as the next pastor of the Greater South
Central Missionary Baptist Church. Rev.
Gilliam served Greater South Central
faithfully into the first quarter of 2004.
A Pastor Search Committee composed of deacons and other
church members was formed in the spring of
2004 to guide the search process. This
committee’s charge was to screen and
interview viable candidates and make
recommendations to the Deacon Board
regarding the future Pastor. After an
eight-month search, on November 8, 2004 Rev.
Ray Hines, Jr. was called to Pastor Greater
South Central Missionary Baptist Church.
The Lord again added greatly to His church.
A group of members from New El Bethel
Baptist Church, as well as others, joined
the GSC family in an ongoing effort to
spread the good news.
Greater South Central Missionary Baptist
Church is special in our hearts and lives.
We would not have come this far had it not
been for the Lord on our side. Our progress
has been amazing. From a few, many have
been blessed. From a little, much has
been accomplished. Thanks be to God who has
preserved our faith, our vision and our
spirit, we will continue in the days ahead
to be conquerors through Christ Jesus our
Lord and our Savior. We shall walk into the
future leaning on the everlasting arms of
Jesus.
“For all that has been, thank you Lord.
To all that shall be, Lord we praise Thee”.
